For the past few days, I have been considering an article centering on the theme, “Let your light shine.” I got the idea, when I read the stats for popular blog articles. I am surprised to discover people kept coming across “Is Your Light Shining?”
After my initial surprise, I felt it time to write a new article on that theme; except, it will not talking about a certain YouTube personality.
I could do a rewrite; however, a fresh take seems best. Have you looked at the photo? The image begs the question. How do I carry out that? How do we illustrate Christ, to other people?
Here is my understanding of Matthew 5:14-16. It may or may not surprise you. How does the following sound to you?A couple of years ago, I came across the story of a young man suffering from depression. He had lost his father, as a child. The tragedy sent his life spiraling out of control. When I came across his story, the child has grown into a young man.
You don’t outgrow depression. If you do not take care of it; depression can take you down some nasty roads. For this young man, it meant hiding in virtual space and video games. It seems that he was trying to relive happy memories of his father.
Thankfully, he ran into a YouTube, who’s known for creating family friendly Minecraft videos. This YouTuber is a father and a good storyteller. As he listened to Paul Soares Jr.; the young man began to recall his father and the healing process began.
How do I know the young man’s story? Paul has a community forum and the young man signed into it. He left a thank you message to Paul. His story is quite touching and Paul tweeted it, to his fans. Guess what?
When I checked his story, the young man was getting some needed sympathy and encouragement. We understood his needs; it was no problem to reach out. If I recall, another person and I did share about the love God, the Father.
For the young man, the lights were definitely on. I can only trust Jesus to continue reaching out to the young man. Here’s the key. Jesus says that “He is the Light of the world.” You can read it, in John 8:12. How does Jesus do it?
The Holy Spirit works through the hearts of willing Christians. That is correct. Though God, the Father doesn’t need my help in shining a light, for those in need; my cooperation is preferable. Here is something to consider:
6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.
7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; [2 Cor 4:6-8]
How does this relate to the young man, Paul Soares and a forum called Punchwood? Why don’t you read the Scripture in the photo? It’s from Matt 5:14-16.
Paul was willing to open the door, for the young man. He did it, through his conducts on YouTube and the forum. Other people were willing to step up and share. As a result, he got a lot of good words and he may have gotten a glimpse of Christ.
It simply took a willing heart to step out, in faith. There is something that I’d like to point out to you. It’s very likely this young man has never been in a church or seen any use for it. Thankfully, he met Christians in an unexpected place.
It is very likely you are not into video games and you may be asking a question. How can I let my light shine, for others? In my local area, there is a wonderful non profit organization called Dial A Ride. It’s a part of Somebody Cares.
It’s an organization that serves the needs of senior citizens in Whiting NJ. You can find out more by calling (732) 350-1400. How is this related? Did you know Dial A Ride is in serious need of volunteers, who can drive?
By volunteering, you are doing more than helping a great organization. You are helping to meet the needs of many seniors, who should not be driving and need grocery or go to a doctor’s office. There is more. It’s an opportunity to share Christ.
Dial A Ride is not the only organization in need of help. I have an aunt, who volunteers at GoodWills and she’s in her 70s. I am certain that I can find other great examples. I would encourage you, to talk with God, the Father. Where do you want me? How can share Christ in my current location?
Remember: The light is not for you, alone. That precious light is for the many people around you. For one does not hide a lamp under a basket. It would be totally useless. You put a lamp on a stand; so everyone can benefit from the light of the lamp.
As followers of Jesus, we’re not called to sit on a wooden pew, sing some great worship songs and listen our pastor or minister. We are to go out and share Christ. As we go, we are to share the good news of the Gospel. This is not possible; if we’re hiding behind the walls of a church building.
I know of a young man, who created a YouTube channel centered on video games. As he likes talking with his fans, the young man created a Q & A type show. You’d be shocked at the many non gaming related questions. Though it’s not the best environment, he does get to share his faith and demonstrate Christ.
Do you get my point? How is your light shining?
