Is anyone out there? Are you looking for a site that trashes a popular Bible teacher like Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyers, Bill Johnson or Charles Stanley? If so, we need to talk!
Some time ago, I came across an established Christian teacher complaining about Christian bloggers. He is frustrated by bloggers, who are calling him, “a false teacher”.
This poor guy is not the only one. I’ve seen similar accusations leveled at Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyers, Bill Johnson, Charles Stanley and so forth. There is a site that lists every Bible teacher that you can think of. It’s how I found out about Charles Stanley.
Such blog sites and website help no one. Some years ago, I suffered a nasty bout of depression and had a fear of rejection. Though I was a Christian, it was not easy to reach out for help. Both Charles Stanley and Joyce Meyers were an immense help to me. Though Joyce was a little hard to follow, Joyce’s heart was in the right place.
Though Joyce was a little hard to follow, Joyce’s heart was in the right place. How does this relate to the above website? If I had run into those guys, then I would not have gotten the needed help. These guys would have likely left me, as a prisoner to shame, rejection and depression.
Ever heard of Hank Hanegraaff? Though Hank is not a fan of the Charismatic movement, he did prove to be helpful in his old radio show. I really did need to learn the basics of the Christian faith before I dove into the Charismatic stream. Oddly enough, it is Hank that introduced me, to Joyce Meyers.
I guess that it doesn’t help to complain about someone. One day, I saw Joyce Meyers on television. Being curious, I chose to listen and see what Hank is talking about. With caution, I did listen to Joyce and I gave thoughts to her points. In the end, I gained invaluable help from this lady.
As a man seeking help, I did not need to add paranoia to the list. Am I exaggerating? No, I am not kidding you. I did get one useful tip, from Hank’s crew. I used the Internet to do some research. As I did my research, I ran into many sites deriding this person or that person. Everyone had an opinion.I was left with a growing sense of paranoia and a ton of
I was left with a growing sense of paranoia and a ton of uncertainty of who to trust. Heck, I wasn’t certain if I should trust any apologetic sites; including legit ones. Here is the problem. Although there is much agreement in the Christian community, there is also a great deal of disagreement. Differences of opinion is not a bad thing!
Everyone has an opinion and a blog can open the floodgate to this reality. It’s very easy to sit down and throw out an opinion on any topic. However, a good blog post or article is not written in such a fashion. As a blogger, I have two choices relating to today’s topic.
I could easily write something with a goal towards trashing Joyce Meyers, Bill Johnson, Joel Osteen or Charles Stanley. It would be easy enough to tear into someone, who’s only crime is to help people. Here is what Paul has to say about such tactics:
14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.[Galatians 5:14-15]
Such tactics help no one and it only serves to give Satan, an open door to sew division and strife. Even worse, we’ve done nothing to help the hurting souls, out there. We’re certainly not showcasing the love of God, the Father or fulfilling the Great Commission.
What is the alternative? In this case, my blog site is about helping people who are suffering from anxiety, depression and other such adversities. The other categories are simply to add value to my site. Let’s say, I see a Joyce Meyers video that doesn’t sit well with me. What shall I do?
For me, the answer is quite simple. I write on the topic that she’s teaching on. For me, such a video is a source of inspiration and a potential audience! Do you think that I am not aware of her fan base? I am aware and I know there is in interest the topic of that video. Otherwise, Joyce would not feel the need to teach on it.
Though the video may serve as a reference point, I am not exempt from doing my own homework. Yes, I have to research the topic, pray and seek God’s wisdom and search the Scriptures.
How are you different? Don’t they do the same thing? There is a difference. My goal is to help the readers by sharing my perspectives on the issues. It is not my job to judge Joyce Meyers or anyone else. My job is to help people, who come to my blog site. It’s very likely they are not looking for finger pointing.
Here is what James says in James 4:11-12
11 Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy; but who are you who judge your neighbor?
My job is to share the love of Christ. It’s to encourage visitors to seek God, the Father while there is time. How am I showing the goodness of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, if I am trashing a sister in Christ? I could say the same thing about Bill Johnson and Charles Stanley.
Remember, there is a difference between disagreeing with someone and trashing someone. It is okay to have an opinion; however, it does not have to include the devouring of others. Paul gives a similar statement; however, he also gives a tip:
4 For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. 5 Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God. [1 Corinthians 4:4-5]
If you missed it, Paul’s tip is quite simple. Let God deal with it; not you. Jesus is quite capable of examining my own heart and help me in dealing with any issues. The same thing goes for you or anyone else. If you feel the need to do something then pray for that person.
Let’s stop using Satan’s tactics and they’re wonderfully summed up in Galatians 5:19-21. It’s the perfect environment for the accuser of the brethren!:
19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
As Christians, we supposed to take the opposite approach. Let walk in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. You may have heard of these fruits. They’re called the fruits of the Spirit! See Galatians 5:22-23. I would encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit and learn.
What if, I am not a blogger or a writer? I’m just reading this article. What about me?
If you are reading this article then you’re on the Internet. Blogs are not the only places where you can leave a comment or two. You can do the same thing on Reddit and on YouTube videos. Why not leave helpful comments or insights in the comment section of those videos?
The same thing applies to Reddit. Facebook groups and pages. Pray and seek God, the Father and talk with God, about it. Ask, “How can I be a blessing to the people reading my comments?”
